Island Cup, Port Alberni, B.C.29 juin
The last Island Cup race of the year was held at Port Alberni on one of the best tracks on Vancouver Island. We arrived Friday night to peep the scene and take a quick look at the track which had obviously been dialed in by the local builders. Saturday was practice day and the Lama riders got a few runs in. Prior to the weekend we switched to lighter springs. 200 lbs for Simon and Ben, and a 250 lb for Justin. The bikes were hooking up crazy so there were no excuses. Simon Garstin was using the DMC moto trainer to time himself. First run was a flat tire. First full run was a 4:08. Next run was a 3:55. Next run was a 3:50. After that he tried another but sucked at life and got a 3:56 so he packed it up to sleep in his bed in Courtenay.
Sunday morning practice had all the racers out so Simon got there early with pinna' Jamie Biluk. Jamie had the private shuttle going courtesy of his hot “broad.” Benoit Labelle ate massive amounts of shit in practice going over some sketchy stump huck into a dust chute. He was OK but was feeling it the next day. Come race run a lot of corners were blown to oblivion for the expert riders.
In the final Benoit got a 4:18 (11th place), Justin got a 4:11 (7th place), and Simon got a 3:52 (1st place). Simon Quote: “Course was sick as usual. First real DH course I have raced all year. First Island Cup I have won ever so I am pretty psyched.” A big thanks goes out to the guys at Ozzie Cycles for organizing and course work for the race. Also thanks to the Lama Cycles team sponsors:
