QC Cup, Mont Sainte Anne 2009

15 juillet

The third round of the Quebec Cup was held in Mont Saint Anne on the legendary World Cup track. Despite it being a provincial race, it felt like a national round. Two time world champion Sam Hill and a few other world cup racers like Mich Delfs from the Kenda/Morewood team brought the competition to another level. Sunny weather welcomed the riders to the unforgiving race course for most of the weekend.

The course itself is super fast, super rough, and super awesome. The first part of the track is a berm filled wooded section were accurate and precise riders will take a few seconds on their opponents. The lower part of the track calls out for a lot of courage and determination as flat out speed (+50km/h) in rocky open sections is the key to making it down to the bottom first. A couple fresh new sections and big jumps were added which made for some spectacular crashes. Even though the three kilometre long course is not very steep, the speeds are super high with no room to rest anywhere until you cross the finish line. The course was dry until it rained Saturday night which left the top woods sections greasy, and the open bits tackier. This made tire choice a game of compromise.

“This course is very different from what we are used to on the Quebec and Canada Cup circuits. Usually, in the eastern part of Canada, tracks are rocky, technical and tight therefore slower in speed.” Benoit Labelle, Lama Cycles Team manager

A lot of racers got injured during the weekend. Unfortunately, Benoit Rioux, from the Lama Cycles team, was part of the list with a broken scaphoid bone.  After an amazing season start, Ben Rioux was faster than ever and getting prepared for the world cups that will be held in Quebec in two weeks. We wish him a fast recovery and hope he is going to come back even stronger next season.

The weekend was a great success for the Lama Cycles team who proved once again to be one of the best downhill MTB teams in Canada with the fastest cadet, fastest junior, and fastest canadian pro.

Guillame Labrie won the cadet category by 14 seconds which would have put him 11th in elite. Guillaume is now leading his category by over ten points.
