Quebec Cup 3 and 4, Camp Fortune 2010

29 juin

Pow! What a weekend! I'm not gonna have a lot to say because the results speak for themselves…plus I'm currently typing this in Wisconsin as we are flying across to BC on the I-94.That's right my friends, a full 4 days of road trippin' and we are in the promised land of mountain bikers: Whistler!

Check out the full gallery of over 1350 pictures from the race weekend in Camp Fortune. All picture where taken by professional photographer . Gabriel Distilio.

So, back to our race weekend, two words: in-sane! Camp fortune is always a preferred stop on the Quebec Cup circuit. It's also a place where the Quebec-Ontario rivalry (friendly of course) is felt, depending on both provincial cup schedules. This year only a few Ontario racers showed up and it was good to see them again. I think an Ontario cup was being held on the same weekend which would explain the low numbers from Ontario.

It was great to see so many team booth setup to offer support for their racers. We counted at least 15 full sized booths which is a good number for a provincial cup. It warms the heart to see a collective effort towards making DH racing a better known sport.

Two races where scheduled for Sunday… and on two different tracks, which didn't make much sense. The marshals quickly closed one track and let the riders focus on single course for the two races. Qualifying runs and mandatory runs on both tracks would have been a nightmare. So, props to the marshals for catching that early on Friday.

A few small modifications (very minor) to last year's Quebec Championship track allowed for better flow and loads of fun practicing. A very short track (2m20sec/Hans Lambert) but a very fast one, with only 5-7 actual braking spots. So you're basically looking for speed in some spots or dealing with copious amounts of it in other spots.

Qualifying runs were exciting as racers sprinted to the bottom on a track where one mistake can set you back 5 positions easy.  I've always enjoyed seeding runs for the theatricals at the finish line: racers pinning it almost to the end and, as soon as they are in sight, sitting down to cross the finish line hahaha! Obviously you can hear things like “I was just cruising it” or “I played it safe” when you know they were on the throttle. It's all part of the fun and games!

Sunday started bright and early and we made it just in time to the hill to squeeze in a practice run to wake us up. Then the waiting game started. The usual back and forth to the bathrooms, joking around, hydrating and bike prep took place before it was time to head up to the start.

Our boys made us proud, finishing 1st (Yann Gauvin) and 5th (Franck Kirscher) at the first race, 2nd (Yann Gauvin) and 5th (Franck Kirscher) at the second race. The Lama boys were representin'on the podium!
